Guiding Question: What impact did your French person have on French culture?

Pays/Ville:

I was born in Samur, France

Details Personnels:

It was not until I was one year old that my parents finally married, and after a difficult pregnancy, my mother became terribly ill which eventually resulted in her death in 1895. Unable to deal with his responsibilities of raisng and supporting five children, my father abandoned me and my siblings. I went to boarding school with my sisters while my brothers became unpaid migrant workers. Eventually I became old enough to work and leave, but in the seven years I was at that school I felt the absentness of a missing father. Even in these poor conditions I refused to accept my state of absolutly no money, even when I grew older I lied that I was raised by my Aunts. While I was at a local cafe one time I performed a song about a poor girl who lost her dog named Coco while I was performing people began shoting "Coco! Coco!" which is where I got my nickname!

Date de naissance:

My father soon after not knowing how to take care of five children by himself abandoned our family, never to be seen again. My sisters and I were sent to a boardng schoool until we were old enough to work and my brothers went off to work as migrant workers.

"In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different"

Mon influence sur la culture:

I do not wish to toot my own horn, but due to my input on the fashion industry I do believe I revolutionized the way that women and men thought about clothing. I believed that women's clothing was too overdone and frilly, and I wanted to get rid of the lace and frills and keep it simple yet ellgnant. I believed that women should not give up comfort to look cute. I emphasized straight lines with simple colors: like grey, beige, and navy. I invented a new way to consider jerseys, before they were considered to masculine for women to wear, except for undergarments, and I one day decided to cut a hole in a jersey for my head, added a few asseccories and women actually asked where I bought my dress! I also was the first to touch sportswear for women, it was unheard of for women to wear sportswear and I turned it into a cute new fashion statement!

I am sure that most of you, perhaps women more, have heard of the perfume Channel No. 5 well that was of my inventions! I teamed up with perfume expert Ernest Beaux, and we created a new type of perfume. Unlike what was popular when I first came out with my perfume, the strong yet lovely smell of flowers and rose-water, I wanted a simplistic appealing scent. So Beaux incorperated into my purfume actual jasmine. Also I used a simplistic square bottle rather then the more popular extravengent design of perfume bottles. My idea was to make the most expensive perfume in the world, while I am not sure how well that worked out, it deffinatly did become one of the most popular.

Also, many of you may already know the about the quite popular little black dress, most of you probably own one or know someone who does. Well I created it in 1926, a totally new idea to the fashion world, not only with the style but with color too. Never before had dresses been so simplistic, and women barely ever wore black because they were associated with funerals. In one Vogue article my dresses were called the Ford of eveningwear, because of its different functions and durabillity. I would intergrate jewelry like imitation pearls and gems to dress up my simple designs. I also created a new trend, by showing up to social events in pants. This was unheard of prior to me. I feel honored that I made such a difference in the fashion industry, and although I did not speak out against feminism, I used my clothes to empower women, which may not seem like much, but I was hoping for a start!

Notes:

After my death in 1971 Karl Lagerfeld took over my designs and created work aimed towards younger customers. Although he was very much like me and created the same type of clothes that I make, the simple and comfortable yet cute designs. He was quiet successful and well know nationwide.

Nice and detailed information, nice to include the youtube video. Why is the slide show there 3 times? Besides the silde show the information was very good and all of it was in first person.

I like your page, it's very pretty! I especially like your cool slideshow thing and I like that it moves sideways.
I think it could have used more color.

Magnificent work Blair! The pictures, videos, and sideshows really add to the uniqueness of your page. I learned a lot about Coco Chanel and her work. She is now even more inspiring to me then she was before. Overall, very well done!
